Earlier this month entrepreneurs submitted their dream to start or expand a business in the Northwest Iowa Dream Big Grow Here grant contest and recruited family, friends and customers to vote for their entry. Nearly 8,000 total votes were cast and today we are announcing the top three vote-getters, along with two additional entrants chosen by a selection committee, who will advance to the regional competition. These finalists will have the opportunity to present their idea to an audience and judges in a pitch event for a chance to win thousands in cash prizes. The five finalists are:

Downtown Partners in Sioux City, Iowa is pleased to announce that the second year of funding is available for the Downtown Sioux City Storefronts & Start-Ups Grant Program. Applications are available for businesses looking to enhance their downtown spaces. Eligible projects must be located within the boundaries of the Downtown Partners SSMID and funds are strictly for use towards storefront improvements and/or start-up business space needs.

More than 125 economic development professionals and community leaders will be in Sioux City next week attending the 2019 Professional Developers of Iowa (PDI) fall conference. Held at the Sioux City Convention Center September 23-25, attendees will have an opportunity to network with colleagues from across the state. The 2019 theme, “The Changing Nature of Iowa”, will address talent attraction, placemaking, immigration, housing, advocacy and more. An update with Iowa Economic Development Authority Director and Sioux City native Debi Durham is also planned.

The economic development organizations in northwest Iowa are teaming up for the fifth consecutive year to offer the Dream Big Grow Here business grant contest in our region. The Dream Big Grow Here contest is an opportunity for entrepreneurs and small business owners to fulfill their dreams of self-employment or to expand of their current business. The contest allows entrepreneurs the chance to submit their dreams to start or expand a business, then encourage friends, family, and customers to vote for them online.

Iowa Better Tucking Bureau is the latest recipient of the Pride of Sioux City: Beautification Award from the Sioux City Economic Development Department. This award is presented to Sioux City employers who show pride in the appearance of their business property. Mayor Bob Scott presented Iowa Better Tucking Bureau with the award and commendation at the August 26th City Council meeting.

America’s SBDC Iowa (SBDC) is pleased to announce that lienwaivers.io of Sioux City, is the winner of the SBDC’s statewide July Business of the Month Award.

lienwaivers.io is a platform to manage construction payments, and was formed in January 2016 after the founders connected at a Sioux City business networking event. The founders worked in different industries, and came together to build a comprehensive technology solution to the lien waiver and payment process for construction projects.

The Siouxland Expo Center, a dynamic new multi-purpose venue in Sioux City, broke ground on a new 104,000-square foot building today. Those in attendance included Mayor Pro Tem Dan Moore, Siouxland Expo Center Board Chair Dirk Lohry and Woodbury County Board of Supervisors Chair Keith Radig.

The Sioux City Economic Development Department wants to encourage and highlight Sioux City employers who show pride in the appearance of their business property by awarding selected businesses the Pride of Sioux City: Business Beautification Award.

A committee comprised of local business professionals and city staff will select Sioux City companies from a list of nominations to receive the Pride of Sioux City award. The recognition will be presented at the City Council meeting.

The Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) announced today that that the 27 Flags site in the Southbridge Business Park in Sioux City is the latest to achieve certification through the Iowa Certified Site Program. This site is the 25th in the state to be designated as project-ready for industrial development.

The Siouxland Expo Center, a dynamic new multi-purpose venue in Sioux City, took a major step forward with the City Council adopting plans and specifications for the building at its regular meeting on Monday, March 11, 2019. The building will be owned by the non-profit Siouxland Expo Center. The City of Sioux City is conducting the bidding process for the construction of the estimated $12.7 million building. Bids will be received on April 9, 2019, with construction of the project anticipated to be complete by June 1, 2020.
